Filler to help wounds heal
A FILLER that can
be poured into
wounds which will
not mend could
dramatically speed
up the healing
process.
Made from collagen
(the protein found
naturally in human
skin), the jelly-like
substance appears
to halve the time it
takes for painful
wounds to close.
Scientists who
have tested the
experimental filler
predict it could help
thousands affected
by diabetic leg
ulcers that will not
heal because of
poor circulation.
It works by sealing the wound and binding to surrounding tissue to help it close.
Dr Douglas Miller, from the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station, says: 'The
size of the wound shrank more rapidly when treated with the sealant. Collagen
is the most abundant protein in the human body. It's been described as the glue
that holds you together.
Slow-healing wounds cost the NHS millions of pounds
each year in extra nursing care and treatment, as well as causing suffering to
patients.
